Superman Ain’t Coming

No one is coming to save you, and that’s good—it gives you the chance to be the hero of your own life. You’re not helpless.

“Damsel” applies to everyone. People are busy and rarely step in to solve your problems—they expect you to handle them yourself. Most get through tough situations, but some fall into a victim mindset, encouraged by TV and groupthink.

Who or What are You Truly Waiting For?

Everyone has a limited time on earth, and time is our most valuable resource. We never know how much we’ll get—some people live a hundred years, others much less. Waiting for someone to save you is a waste of that precious time.

SOS is a call for help, but you shouldn’t expect an answer. Don’t count on anyone to save you. Start working your way out of your problems.

Why should someone stop looking after themselves to save you? Most people don’t expect you to help them, either. If you would, that makes you a real hero. We should care for each other, but it starts with taking care of ourselves.

You may avoid needing to be rescued if you pay attention to yourself. Just because they don’t think you will, is exactly why you should. Have you ever seen a movie where the hero saves the villain who is about to slip and fall? You wonder why, after all that fighting, he didn’t just let him die. It’s a gamble, but if it pays off, the criminal owes the hero one.

Look at it this way. When you help someone who would not spit on you if you were on fire, it forces them to think about their own behavior. Some people, on the other hand, are just sociopaths, and then your actions don’t matter. Still, do it because it proves you are a cut above them. Some criminals are so mad at themselves and the world that even when you save them, they will still try to harm you. It is just in their nature, but a hero is not thinking about someone else’s bad actions; they are thinking about how their actions were the right thing to do.

Right Is Not Always Seen as Right

That philosophy is not the norm, so I don’t think it will happen. That is why waiting for someone to save you is not the best course of action for yourself. Never rely on someone else to do what you think is the right thing.

Instead, you do the right thing. Thank them and praise them if they do, but don’t expect them to do it. Do not see others through your own eyes and emotions. If you do, there is a chance of being let down, and you are setting yourself up for failure.

We want to believe that people are inherently good, so we put our fate in their hands. Unfortunately, you may be setting yourself up for disappointment. People know right from wrong, but if we all followed it, the prisons would not be overcrowded, and this world would run smoothly. False hopes create false expectations. Another reason why waiting for Superman is a waste of time.

Saving Yourself Makes You a Mystery to Others

When you do save yourself, many wonder how. Think about the stories we hear about people losing a lot of weight, or people navigating through shark-infested waters, or the guy they make a movie about. Look at Marcus Luttrell’s situation in the movie Lone Survivor. He got help, but he didn’t rely on it.

Getting saved by someone else usually starts when you decide to save yourself. Entrepreneurs, for example, look at others who are fighting to become. They may lend them a hand. They think to themselves, either they never got one or someone rescued them, and they are paying it forward.

Figuring out how to save yourself and actually doing it makes everyone else wonder. Again, we all have the capability, but not everyone has the desire. The lack of desire is why some hope to be rescued.

When It Doesn’t Happen, What Happens?

When a person looking to be saved by a Superman doesn’t get the rescue they hope for, they allow the circumstances to overtake them. Some fall victim to the belief that nobody cares. That’s not true; it’s just that Superman was busy or just tired. There are lots of people who feel they need saving.

We live in a world where some expect to be saved. Do not become one of those people. Become your own Superman and let those who see you wonder how you did it. Perhaps your strength will inspire someone else. A real hero does exactly that. They inspire others.

Wear Your Cape with Pride

Realize that you may be in a minority because you have made the effort to save yourself. You understood that you cannot rely on the government, friends, or even family sometimes to swoop down and save you. You did it. Give yourself credit for doing what many refuse to do.

Not everyone is waiting for Superman, but choosing to save yourself puts you in the minority. So put on your cape and wear it well. Waiting to be rescued by someone else will keep you down continuously. What we see in movies and read in comics does not always happen; in fact, it is a rarity.

You have the capability to make things happen. Couple it with a desire to see it happen, and you will amaze not only yourself but also everyone who refuses to do the same. If someone does rescue you, be absolutely thankful to them and remember what they did for you. Do the same for someone else. Don’t wait for Superman, become him yourself.
